Internship Opportunities

Intern at Andrus

Andrus sponsors Graduate Internship Training Programs in the field of behavioral health for graduate students pursuing degrees in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Marriage & Family Therapy, and Psychology.

The Graduate Internship Training Program (The Internship) is a vital part of Andrus’ mission, offering students working toward the completion of their degree the opportunity to develop the necessary skills to practice independently.

The Internship is a formal training opportunity for graduate students to foster their professional development through clinical application of their academic learning under the supervision of licensed professionals in the field of their study.

Students can participate in the Internship Program during various levels of their graduate and post-graduate training, as indicated in the link below.

Social Work

Second Year Social Work students working toward their MSW have the opportunity to participate in a nine—twelve month internship through Andrus that meets all client contact, administrative, and supervisory requirements.

The Internship is offered through two separate tracks: the Mental Health clinic-based track (traditional CMHC services for children, adults, and families) and the Campus residential-and school-based track (provision of therapeutic services to children and families).

Mental Health Program Internships at Andrus

The internship is offered through the Mental Health Program at Andrus in either the Yonkers or Peekskill Community Mental Health Clinics.

Our Mental Health Program is an outpatient, community-based mental health setting with its primary goal being early identification of and intervention with children and their families at risk for mental illness or under intense situational stress. Our program resources are focused on the treatment of children, adolescents, and adults who have significant emotional, developmental and/or family problems. Although it is among the largest facilities in the nation specializing in outpatient treatment of children under the age of 13, opportunities to treat adolescents and adults are also available.

Internship commitments must be during a minimum of September through May. Students seeking longer placement can start summer prior or end summer after. Single semester placements and January placement starts cannot be accommodated.

All interns are required to participate in regularly scheduled didactic seminars on Thursday morning and are expected to take on an active role in all training activities, supervision, and staff meetings. Staff meetings are scheduled on Thursday afternoon.

Internship seminars may be supplemented by agency-sponsored trainings, which interns are encouraged to participate in if their academic schedule allows.

Students with interest in applying for placement in the Andrus Mental Health Graduate Internship Program can submit a cover letter and resume directly to the Director of Clinical Training & Supervision, Linda Fettmann, at lfettmann@jdam.org

Applications will be reviewed and interviews conducted February-June annually.

Psychology

Doctoral Training

Final Year Psychology students working toward their PsyD or PhD have the opportunity to participate in a full year (12-month) internship through Andrus that meets all client contact, administrative, and supervisory requirements, consistent with APPIC guidelines & APA accreditation*.

The Internship offers two separate tracks:

  • An “Outpatient” (Mental Health) clinic-based track (traditional CMHC services for children, adults, and families)
  • A “Campus” track that involves the provision of therapeutic services (individual & family) to children in the Day Treatment Program on the Andrus campus and includes school-based consultation and groups with both Residential and Day students.

Interns from both tracks attend weekly didactic seminars together and receive individual supervision through their respective divisions.

Applications are currently only being accepted for the Outpatient track.

Health and Wellness Outpatient Centers

Our Health and Wellness Centers Program is in an outpatient, community-based mental health setting with its primary goal being early identification of and intervention with children and their families at risk for mental illness or under intense situational stress. Most of our Mental Health resources are focused on the treatment of young children who have significant emotional, developmental and/or family problems. As such, it is among the largest facilities in the nation specializing in outpatient treatment of children under the age of 13, with a uniquely high proportion of preschoolers. In addition, we have recently added the opportunity to treat more adolescents and adults and provide therapy via telehealth and in schools. Interns are provided with supervised clinical experiences and a rich, extensive didactic seminar schedule. Intern placements are in either the Yonkers or Peekskill Centers.

The Campus Division of Andrus

The Campus Division of Andrus is located on a 110-acre campus in Yonkers, New York. Campus programs serve more than 175 seriously emotionally disturbed children, grades 1-9, in two distinct treatment programs: residential and day treatment. Children from both the residential and day programs attend the Orchard School, located on the Andrus campus. Due to the interns’ involvement with the on-campus Orchard School, this track is best suited for those students coming from school or combined school/child doctoral programs and who seek specialized training in this area.
