Campus Programs – Residential Treatment

Our Residential Treatment Program serves over 80 children between the ages of 5-16 who live in one of five cottages on our 110-acre campus. Our diverse resident population is composed of children and families from Long Island to Albany and beyond, and from a broad range of racial and socio-economic backgrounds. What is common to all of our residents, however, is that before they can safely and successfully rejoin their families and home communities, they require intensive emotional, psychiatric and/or behavioral care.

The best evidence-based practices inform and permeate our setting but it is the love and caring of all the staff for the children and families we serve that sets the Andrus Residential Treatment Program apart. Our focus on providing innovative care at the highest standards of excellence enables us to provide an unparalleled quality of service to nurture families and help restore the community. Generations of alumni have gone on to lives of greater independence and stability.

WHO WE SERVE

Treatment

Many of the children we serve face challenges as a result of trauma and stress or developmental issues such as autism and the accompanying emotional disregulations. Under our care, these children are loved and nurtured back to emotional health amidst the rolling wooded hills, orchards, pond and wildlife on our campus which foster a calm setting in which children have a chance to heal. Our campus features an indoor pool, on-site movie theater, a therapeutic motorbike program, a 25-element ropes course, gardens and farm animals, as well as therapy dogs.

Trauma-Informed Care Model

The Sanctuary Model is a premier evidence-informed model of trauma-sensitive care and the foundation of the care we provide through the Residential Treatment Program. Through Sanctuary, we are able to foster resiliency, recovery and healing in the children we serve through a democratic approach in which children and families participate in their care and in the structure of the program itself. We implement Sanctuary based on the latest innovations in the field and all of our staff are trained in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI), a highly-regarded model of crisis avoidance and de-escalation developed by Cornell University. We also employ a variety of other therapeutic services and keep current on the emerging neuro-biological understanding of trauma’s effects on the brain in order to learn techniques which support optimal brain development.
